This online course teaches you how to use the proven workflow to seamlessly integrate Building Information Models in the energy modeling process. This workflow allows you to deliver results faster and earlier in the design process, while giving you the ability to manage design iterations. All of this can be done with a LEED-compliant energy modeling tool, such as IES VE, TRACE, and OpenStudio, which saves you time by avoiding the rework that would otherwise be necessary from transitioning to this tool. The integration process works by preparing a clean gbXML import file, avoiding errors before they happen. A robust modeling structure is followed to ensure building models are built up correctly from the start.

Section 1: Foundations of Integration Modeling: Construct building geometries using the precise and specific positioning of Revit’s model elements. These elements are placed over an underlay of an example building to understand the relationship and hierarchy between the typical architectural design and the engineered integration process. These techniques are applied to many of the scenarios that would typically be encountered in difficult architectural details, such as open atriums, curtain wall facades, sloped floors, and exterior shading. Complete enclosures surround all room volumes and the model elements are built up to a level of detail of 150 (schematic stage).

Section 2: Geometry Integration: Integrate Revit’s building geometry in IES VE and comprehensively review the model for its integrity to mitigate potential errors. The engineered integration workflow mitigates 95% of the errors that would otherwise occur, and shows you how to fix the minor imperfections within IES’ ModelIt. Once the energy model geometry is perfected, the building constructions and thermal templates are developed and applied from the information taken from the schedules in Revit.

Section 3: Integrated Energy Simulation: The energy model is simulated and then amended for design changes. The amendments are performed in Revit and re-integrated in the IES Virtual Environment. The BIM integration workflow merges only the newly added elements, avoiding rework from rebuilding the geometry and providing comparative feedback results quickly and effectively. Energy conservation are implemented and measured against a baseline model to provide a comparative cost analysis. The building loads are examined for a high-performance building and output reports are generated in order to right size building systems.
